Terrible twos, trying threes, fiendish fours? The names might be less than flattering, but the developmental stages are real. As parents, it’s up to us to make sure our little ones get the mental and physical stimulation they need to grow and advance to the next stage.

Not surprisingly, hours spent in front of a television set do little to improve your child’s skills, but you can foster development with carefully selected activities. Childrens ride on toys fit the bill perfectly. They’re not only great fun, they’re also a wonderful way to help your child flourish.

Toddlers are making huge intellectual strides, and keeping their minds busy will not only help them advance, but it will help prevent mom from losing her hair. One way to manage those terrible twos is by providing your little one with a ride on toy that encourages role playing and independent play, or that helps your child explore her surroundings. Challenge your little angel with some interactive play, and the terrible twos will be a thing of the past.

Preschoolers are learning balance and coordination. They’re learning to ride tricycles and to play nicely with other children. Childrens ride on toys like trikes and Big Wheels give developing muscles just enough room to learn while still providing the safety of three wheels. Riding a bike like a “big boy” will help your little man build the confidence he needs to tackle tougher tasks later in life.

Kids of all ages and with all styles of ride on toys enjoy the benefit of honing their fine motor skills and hand to eye coordination. Learning how far you have to turn the steering wheel to make the corner at the end of the block, or just how much pressure you have to apply to the breaks to do that cool skidding half-turn are important lessons to growing muscles. Imagining you’re chasing the bad guy while doing it is great for building up those creative brain cells, too.

We’re living in a sedentary world where we spend hours in front of the television or computer screen. By encouraging active, imaginative play that sparks your child’s creativity and engages their imagination and cognitive thinking skills, you’re helping your little one meet those important developmental milestones that just aren’t being met by passive entertainment. Ride on toys engage the entire child, from their head to their toes. Best of all, they won’t even know it’s good for them.

If you’d like to take learning about childrens ride on toys (or any type of toys) a little bit further then I recommend this book by Marianne Szymanski. It’s easy to read, it’s very straightforward, and it discusses a wide variety of toys for kids of all ages. It has lots of practical tips and even has mini worksheets to help you narrow down your toy purchases.

Ride on toys are a real crowd pleaser when it comes to gift giving. It’s so much fun to watch your little one’s eyes light up when they see that shiny new Princess Power Wheels or Lionel Pedal Train. There are many options to choose from, but it’s important to be sure you’re buying the best ride on toy for your child.

First, make sure the ride on toy you choose is appropriate for the age of your child. Every toy is marked with an age range, but this is a recommendation, not a mandate. As the parent, you are the best judge of your child’s abilities and skills.

An advanced 4-year old may be quite capable of enjoying a toy recommended for 6 to 8-year olds, but be sure to be realistic with your assessment. Don’t justify purchasing a toy that is clearly too old for your child by declaring that “she’ll grow into it.” A toy that is too complicated, too large, or too intimidating for your child won’t see much play time.

That doesn’t mean that you have to replace ride on toys every few months, though. True, children grow quickly, but if you choose an adjustable toy, your child will get a lot more use out of it. Ride on toys with adjustable seats, pedals, and handlebars will grow with your child, and they’ll be able to enjoy their toy for a longer time.

Since you expect your little one to enjoy his or her new toy months or even years, make sure to look for well-made, sturdy toys. You can buy just about everything cheap these days, but if you want something that lasts, it pays to invest a little extra time (and money) and find one that is durable and built to withstand the rough and tumble play kids engage in. Choose well-constructed toys that feel solid, and your child will be less likely to face the heartbreak of a broken favorite.

Lastly, be sure to ask for your child’s input. The last thing you want to do is to buy a scooter – because you think it’s so cool – only to find out that all your child’s friends have trikes! Above all else, remember that the best ride on toy for your child is the one he or she will play with and love. In the end, that is all that matters.

If you’d like some reassurance that you’re buying the right toys for your child, toys that will help them achieve a high “PQ” or Play Quotient, then you may want to read this book by Stevanne Auerbach. Ride on toys can help your child develop social skills and analytical thinking among many other things. This book is an easy read and is great to keep handy.

Choosing a bicycle for your child that is age appropriate, well designed, and reasonably priced can be daunting at times. When you know your little one has mastered the tricycle and is ready to move up to the next size ride, a two-wheeled bicycle with training wheels is a great way to go.

There are so many different styles of bikes available that you will be sure to find one that fits your child’s individual personality. Whether they like a Princess theme, some Spider-Man adventures, or just a good old Red Flyer bike, there’s a style for every child.

As a parent, it’s important when choosing a bicycle that you choose one that is both age and size appropriate and will be with your child for at least a year if not more. These are a few tips that help your shopping experience run a little smoother:

While the size of an adult bicycle is measured by seat height and frame size, a children’s bicycle size is determined by the size of the wheel diameter.

Common sizes in children’s bicycles with training wheels are 12″, 16″, 20″, and 24″. The bicycle should fit your child comfortably and they should be able to mount and dismount comfortably. They should also be able to straddle the bike with their feet comfortably on the ground. If your child is riding their new bike with their knees hitting the handlebars or is stretched out and having trouble reaching the handlebars then the bike is the wrong size.

Heavier bikes that are made of steel are generally less expensive then the lighter bikes that are made with alloy metals. Your child will have an easier time pedaling with the lighter rides.

When choosing a bicycle for beginner riders the braking mechanism is very important. Your child will need to have control of their bike in order to gain the confidence that they’ll need to eventually ride without the training wheels. Younger children will benefit from bikes that have coaster brakes, which are rear brakes, that are engaged by pedaling backward. Little hands can have difficulty gripping hand brakes and oftentimes don’t have the strength necessary to operate them.

The frame of the bicycle should be strong enough to handle some abuse and you should not be able to bend it by hand. Chains can be dangerous and can grab your child’s shoe laces or pant legs, causing a safety issue. Be sure that the bicycle that you choose has a chain guard to prevent accidents.

The training wheels themselves should be well made and sturdy. You should not be able to bend them and they should be securely fastened. The bike may wobble just a slight bit while your child is learning how to ride but not enough to upset and unbalance the rider.

Last but not least, review the manufacture age recommendations when choosing a bicycle for your little ones. If your child is a little larger or a little smaller than the average 3, 4, or 5 year old then adjust your requirements a little bit to accommodate. Manufacturer recommendations are not written in stone, they are a guideline to help you make the best decision possible.

If you’re choosing a bicycle to buy this year then be sure to take a moment and let us know which bike you choose, and enjoy watching your little ones learn how to ride!

Fortunately, for us parents, there’s really not a lot of maintenance required with the Power Wheels Vehicles. If your kids are spending a lot of time riding, you may find that a wash job is necessary every now and then. To wash your vehicle, all you need is some mild soap, a sponge, and the hose.

You can even apply a little car wax if you’d like. Not only will this keep your kids favorite ride shiny but it will help prevent the color from fading in the sun and the elements. Washing and cleaning these rides is something that you can get the kids involved with. It’s a great way to teach them a little responsibility and you can have fun doing it together.

The most important thing you can do to keep your Power Wheels vehicles operating smoothly is to take care of the batteries. The following tips will help you get the most life out of your battery:

Before your child rides their new toy you will need to charge the battery for 24 hours. Be careful not to cut that time short just because you’re anxious to see the kids climb on board for the first time.

If the initial charge is less than 16 hours then you risk decreasing the life of the battery. If you’re giving your Power Wheels as a gift and you anticipate that the kids will want to ride immediately then you may want to consider buying an extra battery that you can charge beforehand and have ready to go.

Be careful that your battery does not get stored in extreme hot or cold conditions. This can damage the battery and cause it to shrink or swell. You should also avoid setting the battery directly on a concrete floor when you’re charging or storing it. This can drain the power and cause it to lose its charge because the concrete acts as a grounding source.

The more often your kids ride their Power Wheels vehicle, the longer the battery will last. Encouraging them to ride frequently is not only good for them, but it’s also good for the life of the battery. You’ll get a longer lifespan with frequent use.

6v and 12v batteries should not be completely drained of power so it’s important to recharge the battery every time that the kids take a ride. Even if they only take a short ride over the course of the day, be consistent and charge it every time. If your kids don’t ride much during the winter months then it’s a good idea to charge the battery about once a month for 16 to 24 hours. There’s nothing better than a little maintenance charge!

Power Wheels vehicles are very easy to maintain. I little bit of care on your part will ensure that your kids will have a ride on toy that will last for years to come. If you can any questions or concerns about maintenance just leave a comment and I’ll get some answers for you.
