Scooters are very popular ride on toys for children but just like all toys they don’t come without their dangers if they’re not operated correctly.  Before buying your kids a shiny new ride it is beneficial to all if you review some of the most important scooter safety measures that will help keep your little ones as safe as possible.

1.  It’s important that the scooter is age appropriate for your child.  If it’s too large for the child they will have trouble operating it which could cause them to become frustrated or to tip and fall off.  For very young children you may want to consider a three wheeled scooter that will provide extra balance while they’re learning how to ride.  Adhere to manufacturer age recommendations for the motorized rides.

2.  Safety gear is always recommended for children and is important to scooter safety.  A helmet is the most important component because scooters can tip and you want to be sure that your little one’s head is safe.  Elbow and knee pads are also wise choices.

3.  Proper shoes should be worn while riding a scooter.  Sneakers are the most recommended choice.  Sandals and flip flops may upset a rider’s balance and little toes and feet may get injured if your child has to hop off quickly.

4.  Scooters should always be ridden away from moving vehicles and pedestrians.  Set up guidelines with your children by reviewing your safety concerns and making them aware of how important it is that they follow your scooter safety rules.

5.  Uneven ground surfaces can make dangerous riding conditions.  The most frequently seen injuries from scooters occur to the upper body.  This happens when children tip forward over the handles of their scooter and can be caused when the front wheel is stopped by something as small as a bump, some sand, or a large piece of gravel.  This can also be caused by children leaning too far forward on their ride.  Teach your children how to look for and avoid unsafe conditions.

6.  Tuck in any loose clothing, remove scarves and long jewelry, and tie long hair into pony tails before riding.  These are all items that can get wrapped around the wheels or other mechanical parts and cause an injury.

7.  Finally, a parent must make sure that their child’s scooter is properly assembled before they ride on it.  Read the instructions before beginning and tighten secure all nuts, bolts, and screws.

Scooters are loads of fun and will entertain your kids for hours at a time.  A little bit of proper preventative scooter safety measures will ensure that your kids get the most enjoyment as possible from their favorite rides.  If you’d like to bump up your kids fun level a little bit then I recommend that you read Scooter Games, a great book that introduces over 100 scooter games that will challenge and entice your kids.

The Power Wheels Brute Force is an awesome battery operated quad that looks just like its adult version.  One of our neighbors has twin boys, very rambunctious twin boys who have lots of energy to expend.  Anna actually refers to them as the “crazy” boys who live down the street.  She thinks they’re “crazy” but she loves to go for walks to see what they’re up to!

Last summer their father decided to buy them matching quads to keep them busy and his choice was the Power Wheels Brute Force.  Well let me tell you, these quads are not only tough looking but they’re also tough running.  They are the perfect ride for adventurous boys (and girls) who love to get down and dirty.

We got such a kick out of watching these kids tour around the neighborhood.  Anna could tell when they were coming by their sound, and she would run to the front of the house every single time so she could wave hello.

We live in a somewhat rural suburb where there are wooded and country areas.  I’m not sure where these boys were riding their Power Wheels Brute Force quads but they were usually covered in mud, or grass, or water.  They must have traveled through every rough terrain area in the neighborhood.

So the point of all of my rambling is that this is a great ride for your children.  These are some of the highlights of this ride:

• The Power Wheels Brute Force is a 12 volt ride on toy that travels at 2 speeds forward (2.5 mph and 5 mph) and 1 speed in reverse (2.5 mph).  These are very safe speeds for even the inexperienced riders.

• The Brute Force comes equipped with Fisher-Price’s Monster Traction.  This ATV has some similarity to the Power Wheels Ninja, but the monster traction feature is what makes this ride so versatile in any terrain.  Your kids will be able to get around in areas that would make other rides spin and stop.  Not so with this great ride!

• This cool quad has cup holders for drinks and a very roomy storage box that you won’t see on other quads.  This makes it more convenient for the kids to be able to ride longer without having to come back inside the house.

There’s only one word of advice from my neighbor Jeff, and that is to strongly consider getting an extra battery that you can keep charged.  The Power Wheels Brute Force will operate about 2 hours on a charge.  If you’ve got kids that you think will want to ride for longer than that then it will benefit you to have a spare.

Battery operated ride on toys are a great way for kids to become more independent, increase motor skills, and gain self confidence.  This one is very durable, it operates at a very safe speed, and it will satisfy the biggest thrill seeker in your home!

The Brum Pedal Car is one of the cutest pedal cars that I think I’ve seen.  I think I love this car so much because his headlights have eyeballs.  Yeah, really, it feels like he has a little personality because he looks like he’s smiling and looking at me.

Brum is a children’s TV program that originated in Birmingham, England.  Brum himself is a miniature replica of the Austin 7 convertible, otherwise known way back when as the “Chummy”.  He sneaks away from his owner and finds many adventures in the “Big Town” of Birmingham.

As Brum drives himself around town he expresses himself in many different ways. He opens and closes his doors, bobs his suspension, flashes and swivels those cute little headlights, and honks his own horn.   How cute can you get?

We haven’t had the privilege of getting to watch Brum here in the US on a general broadcast channel but I hear that you can find him on some reruns on the BBC network.  I don’t have access to that particular channel but I have some friends who claim this is true – you can always check it out if you’d like.

The Brum Pedal Car has been very stringently reproduced to replicate the original as closely as possible.  What kids love best about the character Brum is what they’ll love best about his pedal car – he’s fun and he’s always up for a good adventure!

• This car has been built under license from original producers Ragdoll Productions.  Brum is made of durable steel so he’ll be sure to last for a long time. He has high traction, solid rubber tires, and even has a spare tire on the tailgate in case of a “breakdown”.

• The red padded seat makes driving more comfortable.  The crank handle actually moves, it has gold hubcaps, running boards, and an old fashioned chrome horn.  The pedal assembly has two movable positions so your child can grow with the car and the pedals are non-slip pedals.

The Brum Pedal Car is sure to bring a smile to any child’s face.  This car will provide a great means of exercise for your kids, will increase independence, and will get those imaginations working full blast.  Although this car isn’t made in the USA, it conforms to all US codes and is free from lead paint.  Look out because your kids will be tooling around the neighborhood in style!

It’s March and there’s definitely the smell of spring in the air today! It’s so wonderful, after months of lousy winter weather, to smell the fresh air and be able to go outside and enjoy.  Warm weather makes me think about working in my gardens, digging in the dirt, getting down with the earth.   Ok, so maybe that’s just a little deep for a children’s blog but oh well, that’s how I’m feeling today.

So what does a Little Tykes Wagon have to do with my need to become one with the earth?  Well, wagons are perfect ride on toys for small children.  They’re a wonderful way to keep the kids entertained while you’re doing a little work around the yard. Last spring, with 15 month old Anna with me, we headed out to the yard in my kids ancient little red wagon from 22 years ago.

I was able to do some work while Anna entertained herself with some toys that I had stuffed in her wagon.  It was fun to work while still holding a conversation with her.  When I was done in one spot, or better yet when she started getting restless, I just trekked off to another area to do a little something else.

This year, with a 27 month old to help, I’m hoping that we’ll be able to put that wagon to use in even more ways.  Of course I’ll still pull her around in it but I’m hoping to get her more involved with the yard work.  Maybe she’ll enjoy picking up all of the branches and such that have accumulated over the winter.  Or maybe she’ll want to be more like Grammie and get right into the earthy business!

I was out shopping this past weekend and just couldn’t resist taking a look at the Little Tykes Wagons even though I don’t have any need to replace the wagon that I have.  I just love the great plastic wagons that are available and these are two of the coolest:

• The Little Tikes Explore Wagon is an incredibly sturdy wagon that has removable sides.  It’s strong enough to handle a fair amount of weight and it’s great to look at with its red, tan, and teal color combination.

• You’ve got to take a look at the wheels on this wagon.  They are just so rugged and tough looking that you will absolutely believe that this wagon can travel anywhere.  I couldn’t resist pulling it around the store and it has a very long handle that makes steering and turning easy.  It has plenty of room inside.

• The Little Tikes Ride and Relax Wagon is a little more luxurious of a ride.  It has some really neat features including seat belts, cup holders, and a storage area for extra goodies.  This wagon is great because it actually converts to a very comfortable bench for the kids to hang out on.

• You can hang out by sitting on this wagon, going for a little walk, or having an afternoon picnic.  If you’re up for some yard work just remove the sides and stock it with gardening supplies.  And what’s really great is that you can even buy this one with an umbrella attachment for some real relaxation.

Whether you’re just looking for a wagon to incorporate into your child’s outdoor playtime, or if you want one to participate with your garden and yard time, a Little Tykes Wagon will be sure to please!

Let’s face it, the Mini Cooper Ride On, without a doubt, does have a character all its own. When a lot of manufacturers stick with mainline vehicles for toddler ride on toys, National Products kind of used a little bit of imagination on this toddler ride on toy.

• One of the first thing that kind of strikes you is that this cool Cooper actually has chrome accents! Not a little, but a lot! The front grill, the wheels and the headlight trim is chrome. So you better have lots of nice rags for your toddler to do some polishing after a long day of racing through the neighborhood or your backyard.

• This is one of the only 6v rides that has this cool feature. In the 12v rides you know you’ll see a little chrome on the Corvette and the Mustang but is this category the Cooper rules.

• Another interesting aspect of the Mini Cooper Ride on is that it is built for only one child. So you kind of have to consider your toddlers size when you’re shopping for one. Although the manufacturer says 3 years and up, toddlers older than that might get just a tiny bit bored with the ride.

• The reason is that the power plant is just one 6v battery and the Mini tops out at a speed of around 2.5 mph unlike many of the larger toddler ride-ons that have a top speed that is twice that. Also pay attention to the weight of your toddler as the vehicle is designed to operate with no more than a 66lb load. Ok..I can hear all you screaming at me..”My child isn’t that big!” Good! Then they’ll have no problem achieving the top speed!

• The Mini Cooper,  if you stop and think about it,  is really more of a first ride on vehicle for a boy or a girl. They’ve outgrown the other toys or are just plain bored with them but they haven’t really gotten big enough to ride the full size battery powered vehicles.  And with a toned downed speed, you will be able to keep up with them quite easily.

• Now speaking of toned, this cool little ride on also comes with a fully operational FM radio that is built right into the dashboard. Just like Mom and Dads Car! So besides cruising they can now chill out with some music to go with it. Personally I think that’s a rather nice touch.

So what’s the verdict on the Mini Cooper Ride on? Simple, it’s not for everyone. If you have a larger toddler that can handle the higher speed that comes with a 12v ride, then this one is not the best choice. But if you have a toddler that’s just a wee bit smaller, and you want a vehicle that can make them giggle and laugh all day and you don’t want to be worried about them running into things at 5mph or better, then this toddler ride on toy certainly deserves a very close look.

And that is exactly what Fisher Price has done with this Toy Story Power Wheels! How many times have you told yourself, “Oh No, no way, he or she isn’t even ready for something as big as those other ride on toys like the tractor, the jeep, and the dune buggy!”

Well, now that problem has been solved and it has been solved with a very unique twist that we will cover here in just a minute. The Little Tikes Bumble Bee Buggy is one of the most adorable little rides for toddlers.  Not only is the yellow and black body style incredibly cute but the smiling face on this little bug gives it a personality of its own.
