So….the weather’s nice, the kids are restless, and you need to find an outlet for all that excess energy radiating off those little devils that you call your kids. They’re antsy, you feel like you’re going out of your mind, and you’ve got the whole day ahead of you. Before you head for that bottle of wine to ease your pain, let’s take a look at some Radio Flyer bikes to help ease the situation.
Radio Flyer is probably most well known for their famous Red Flyer Wagon. They’ve also been producing bikes for just about the same amount of time. Venice born immigrant Antonio Pasin founded this well known company in 1917 with the goal of making all children feel happy with safe and well built toys. This philosophy still holds true to this very day and this great company is still making child all across the world happy and content.
The original Radio Flyer bikes were known for their bright red and white colors, their handlebar streamers, and that cute little chrome bell that let you know where the kids were at all times. Their most popular model over the years has been the tricycle.
Tricycles are great outlets for physical exercise. This exercise will improve motor skills, strengthen muscles, and wear those kids out so they’re ready to hit the sack in style at bedtime. They are also a means for your child to gain independence, self confidence, and boost self esteem.
Radio Flyer bikes are also good for sensory and cognitive development. Your kids will be taking in all of the sights, sounds, and smells in their environment. They’ll be planning adventures, group rides, and mapping out new paths for the day. All of this stimulates their imagination and creativity, skills that will be with them for years to come.
Trikes are great for just about any aged child. There’s a size and a color for all of them. These are a few of the most popular models out there:
- The Classic Red Tricycle is a great choice for children as young as 2 years old. This retro style bike is made of sturdy steel with real rubber tires. At only 10″ tall, this bike has a low center of gravity that makes it easier for the younger children to ride. It has a controlled turning radius to help with tipping.
- The step on back works well when the kids want to piggyback. This Radio Flyer bike is a good choice for kids who don’t know how to ride a bike yet. The push handle lets parents determine the speed and direction that the bike takes. If your child has never pedaled a bike before then this is a great place to start.
If you like the concept of the push handle but want something a little more modern then you may want to consider the Ultimate Classic Trike. This bike has a more updated retro look and has some features that the Classic model doesn’t have. The most notable difference is the new “parent push mode”. In this mode the front wheel’s internal clutch keeps the pedals from turning so your child can just rest their feet on the pedals without them spinning.
This Radio Flyer bike has a parent pouch on the push bar that will hold drinks, phones, key, and small toys. There’s also some storage space in the bike itself. This is a great choice for trips to the park or long walks around the neighborhood.
- The Classic Dual Deck Tricycle is probably the closest replica to the original Radio Flyer bike. This bike is oh so retro with its chrome fender, double deck, steel-spoked wheel, red and white tassels, and that famous old fashioned chrome bell. This bike is a little taller at 12″ high. The second step is there to help the smaller kids get up on the seat. They get an extra step to help them get up and down easily.
- This tricycle has won the Parents Choice Award and boasts the National Parenting Centers Seal of Approval. It’s well made, durable enought to last for years, and comes in both classic red and pink!
Radio Flyer bikes are great toys that will keep your kids busy for hours on end. I have just one little piece of advice concerning the size of these trikes. Although there’s only a 2″ difference between the 10″ model and the 12″ model, that 2 inches can make a big difference for smaller children. The smaller the child, the more difficulty they may have reaching the pedals on the larger model. Just keep this in mind before buying.
Your children will love their classic Radio Flyer bikes and will make memories that they’ll tell their own children about in years to come. If your child already has one of these trikes leave a comment and let us know how big of a hit it has become!
